  • Chapter 31— Across the Border

The moment they passed through the border gate, the soldiers moved quickly. "Get the infirmary ready!"
"Bring hot water and blankets!" Xie Zheng dismounted without waiting for anyone to help him. He carefully carried Suyuan inside the nearest military tent and laid her down, her face was still pale. The silver-white strands in her hair were impossible to miss now.

The physician approached, but Xie Zheng stopped him for a moment. "She has been exposed to smoke and suffered severe weakness. She also has blood at her lips." The physician nodded and immediately began examining her.
Xie Zheng stepped outside only then did he look back toward the grasslands.
The Younis riders had stopped at the border. They remained on the other side, watching.
Neither side moved. The Younis warriors knew that crossing the boundary would mean facing the entire Xian garrison. After a long silence, they finally turned their horses around.
Xie Zheng watched until they disappeared into the darkness.
      A soldier approached.
      "General, should we pursue them?"
      "No."
      The soldier looked surprised.
      "They may return."
"Then we'll deal with them when they do."
Xie Zheng turned toward the tent.
      "Right now, she's more important."

      ...........

Inside, the physician frowned as he examined Suyuan. "General."
Xie Zheng immediately entered. "How is she?" "She's alive, but her condition is serious. Whatever happened tonight has placed enormous strain on her body."
The physician looked at Suyuan's silver-white hair. "How long has she been this ill?"
      Xie Zheng was silent.

      The physician sighed.
"Then we need to find out."
For several moments, nobody spoke, Xie Zheng looked at Suyuan lying beneath the blankets.
This was the daughter of Princess Shuran and somehow, after everything that had happened, she had survived long enough to reach Xian territory. Outside, the first light of dawn began to appear over the distant mountains.
Xie Zheng walked to the entrance of the tent and looked toward the east and beyond those mountains was the capital.

He had already sent word ahead , the Emperor would soon know that Princess Shuran was dead leaving a daughter behind. But Xie Zheng knew there was another question waiting for them. What exactly had happened inside that burning palace? He looked back at the unconscious girl. Those answers would have to wait.
For now, she had finally crossed the border.
      She was home.
