  • Chapter 31 — The Last Pursuit.

The border was still several miles away and behind them, the sound of hooves grew louder.
Xie Zheng looked over his shoulder. The Younis riders had split into two groups , one followed directly behind them while the other was cutting across the grassland, trying to get ahead and force them toward the rocky hills.
"They're trying to block the road," one soldier said. "I see them."

Xie Zheng pulled his sword free. "Keep Suyuan in the center."
The soldiers closed ranks around him. Suyuan was barely conscious against Xie Zheng's chest. She heard the change in the soldiers' voices and slowly opened her eyes. "Put me down."
      "No."
      "You need both hands."
      "I have enough."
Before she could argue, an arrow flew toward them. Xie Zheng turned his horse sharply. The arrow passed behind them. "Keep moving!" The first Younis rider reached them steel struck steel. One of Xie Zheng's soldiers blocked the attack, and another rider moved in from the side. The clash lasted only a few seconds before the Younis warrior fell back but more were coming.

Xie Zheng did not stop, his priority was clear to get Suyuan safely to the border. Then, a rider suddenly appeared ahead, cutting across their path. Xie Zheng pulled the reins , his horse reared slightly before settling. The Younis warrior raised his weapon , Xie Zheng drew his sword in one smooth motion.
      Their blades met.

The impact forced the other rider backward. Xie Zheng struck again, knocking the weapon from his opponent's hand. "Move!"
His soldiers surged forward, forcing the remaining Younis riders away from the road. The formation opened just enough for Xie Zheng to pass through. Suyuan's eyes fluttered open, she saw the sword in his hand.
"You really are fearless " she murmured. Xie Zheng glanced down.
      "Now isn't the time."
A faint smile appeared on her lips. "You're quite troublesome."
"And you're quite difficult to rescue."
Before she could answer, her eyes closed again.
      Xie Zheng's expression tightened.
      "Suyuan?"
      No response.
He immediately checked that she was still breathing.
      She was.
      "Keep riding."

The soldiers pushed their horses harder while the Younis riders continued after them, but the distance between the two groups was finally beginning to widen. Ahead, small watchtowers appeared against the dark horizon it's the Xian border. One of the soldiers raised his voice.
"General! The border post!" Xie Zheng looked ahead. "We're almost there, don't you dare to die on me."
Behind them, the remaining Younis riders slowed.

They knew they could not cross into Xian territory without facing an entire garrison so one by one, they stopped.
Xie Zheng rode straight toward the waiting soldiers at the border, Suyuan still safely in his arms. Only when they passed beneath the Xian banner did he finally lower his sword. The chase was over but Suyuan remained unconscious and Xie Zheng knew the real fight had only begun.
