Sakura is fifteen and her first real crush happens in the middle of a fight with a boy named Sasuke. He’s only there because Naruto is friends with him, and she doesn’t like how he looks at Naruto when he thinks no one else is looking, so she tells him to go away. She does not want him to be jealous. It would ruin the whole point of this matchmaking mission that she was sent on for Kakashi to meet his soulmate—which is why she told Kiba to tell the Hyuuga they were fighting a girl who wanted them both dead instead of Sasuke, since it might give them some peace of mind.
She can handle herself fine. There’s nothing to worry about at all. Except maybe that she’s pretty sure she likes boys too much, and she has a really bad feeling about the boy standing beside Sasuke.
Sakura doesn’t pay attention during the battle with Sasuke—it’s more exciting watching Naruto fight him than it is listening to her teacher describe how she should use chakra control properly to help him dodge her senbon when he gets too close. She doesn’t even notice Kiba until his voice breaks through the air, saying, “Sakura! Sakura! You okay?”
The blood leaves her face as her eyes snap to Kiba, whose expression mirrors the same panic she feels inside. His hand reaches up towards his mouth in an attempt to hide the fact that he just shouted out loud; she’s pretty sure his entire face is bright red by now. She blinks rapidly and nods once, before realizing he’s not looking at her anymore.
Kiba lets out a deep sigh of relief, letting his hands fall down from his mouth and then leaning back against the tree behind him with a groan. “You scared me,” he says. Then he points over at Sasuke, still struggling with Kakashi’s kunai. “Look! That guy doesn’t even know what I just said to you.”
“He probably thought I was going to hit him,” Sakura replies with a smile. Her eyes flick to where Naruto is holding Sasuke down, shouting instructions while Kakashi uses his Sharingan technique to keep him immobilized. Then she looks back at Kiba and gives him a sheepish shrug. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to yell.”
“Hey, it’s okay,” he says, giving her a small smile of reassurance. “I don’t blame you for being freaked out. I mean, he’s pretty hot, isn’t he?”
Sakura tries to ignore the way her stomach twists into knots at his words; she knows she shouldn’t feel weird about people commenting on the boy’s attractiveness—everyone has had crushes on Sasuke or their friends—but the fact that it’s her friend who’s telling her how attractive he is makes her feel… strange.
Her throat starts to feel tight and dry, and she swallows hard to try to get rid of the lump there.
Kiba is still staring at her with wide eyes, and she forces a small grin to tug at the corners of her lips. “Thanks,” she says, before turning away from him to focus on fighting off one of the last remaining Akatsuki members.
      ---
The next day, Sakura sits down with Kiba after school and asks if he wants to come hang out in the park. As soon as she mentions that they have a date tonight, however, he stops smiling and looks genuinely nervous.
“Are you… um… sure about that?” he asks. Sakura stares at him blankly for a moment, trying to figure out what he means. Then suddenly it clicks, and she remembers what Kiba said earlier—that Sasuke was his boyfriend.
“I—uh, yeah,” she stammers, nodding furiously, trying to dispel any awkwardness between them. “I mean, we talked about it last week. We agreed on a date, remember? I already got my dress picked out.”
“Yeah, but are you sure you want to do it? Because if you aren’t, I totally understand, Sakura,” Kiba rushes to explain. “There’s no pressure, man. And I wouldn’t even force you to go, you can cancel if you want to—”
“No!” Sakura cuts him off, almost yelling as she raises her voice. She shakes her head quickly, as though she could shake the thoughts out of her brain if she just tried hard enough. “It’s—it’s really important to me. This is our first real date, Kiba.”
He gives her another hesitant smile, and Sakura feels the tension slowly leave her body as he returns to his old self.
“Okay. Sounds good to me,” Kiba agrees.

The two of them stand up, and when Sakura goes to throw their trash away, Kiba grabs his bag from the ground. They start walking home together, and Sakura finds herself getting lost in the sound of his laughter.
When they arrive at their house, her mother is already sitting on the couch, sipping tea. Her father is nowhere to be found; he’s probably working.
“Oh, you made it back safely,” she greets. “How did your date go, Sakura? Was it fun?”
Kakashi appears in the doorway moments later, dressed in his usual outfit of black pants and a grey shirt, but wearing his signature hat again. He smiles at her and gives her mother a nod of acknowledgment, before turning around and heading upstairs to change into something more comfortable.
As always, his sudden disappearance makes Sakura’s heart race. She loves her parents and will never say anything negative about either of them, but sometimes—especially when it’s dark outside and Kakashi isn’t around—she wishes they hadn’t adopted her without consulting her first. They never asked her opinion, and she never said it out loud. She knew they meant well, but sometimes they seemed to forget that she is a kid, too. Sometimes they forgot that she needs their guidance, that she needs someone who cares about her and wants to take care of her.
And sometimes, she wants to scream.
She pushes those feelings away as best she can and smiles as brightly as she can to mask the fact that she’s been thinking about them all afternoon, and asks her mother, “Did you enjoy your tea?”
She’s rewarded with a knowing smile and a pat on the shoulder. “I did. Thank you.”
Kakashi reappears from the stairs, dressed in his favorite jounin uniform and with his ANBU mask tucked under his arm. He takes off his hat and places it on top of the table as he walks closer to her, pulling out the chair opposite her mother and sitting down.
Sakura notices how stiff his movements are as he sits down—how he avoids looking directly at her.
Kakashi is avoiding looking directly at her.
She wonders if that means he finally found his soulmate, and if he’s upset or disappointed, because he won’t look at her, and—and what does that mean? Does he know who his soulmate is? Will she find out the answers when they talk about it? Is this it, then? Are they finally going to be able to be together? Maybe that means it is a boy—maybe she doesn’t need to worry. He’ll love her, of course he will, because she loves him. She loves him too much to see him hurt. She loves him enough to make him happy, to love him enough to wait for him.
If only she knew who he was destined to be with.
It isn’t like anyone else is interested, anyway. Why would someone choose her to be his soulmate when they already have the prettiest girl in class right in front of them? It must be a mistake, surely.
“What’s wrong with your hair today?” Sakura blurts out before she can think better of it. She immediately regrets it, because it’s so out of character for her to speak randomly when talking to her parents. She knows she should have stopped herself before she opened her big fat mouth.
Kakashi’s shoulders tense as he runs a hand through his hair, stopping mid motion at the realization that his mask is no longer covering his forehead.
