A boy sits in the middle of a field. The sky above him is bright blue and the sun shines brightly on his back, warming him up. The wind picks at the grass as he sits there, letting the warmth and fresh air calm down his nerves. He feels relaxed and content and when the time comes for dinner, he’s ready to get back to work.
He’s sitting with his legs crossed in front of him, feet kicking gently into the soil. As he waits for his parents to finish cooking, he thinks of how good it feels to not have to worry about money or school anymore. It’s been over four years since his grandmother passed away and now he can relax enough to focus on school. Even if he isn’t allowed to take a full year off yet because of his age and his “condition”, he can finally be normal and feel like he belongs here.
His thoughts are cut short when suddenly, someone bumps into him, sending him sprawling onto the ground. In his haste, he drops his bag on top of him and curses quietly.
“Shit, I’m sorry, dude,” someone says apologetically from above him. There’s a moment of silence where neither of them move before the person speaks again, this time much louder. “Hey! What the fuck are you doing out here? Are you lost or something?”
The kid looks up and sees an unfamiliar face. It takes him a second to recognize him as one of the other kids in their class but after that he stands up slowly, brushing himself off.
“I’m not lost. My mom sent me out here to wait for her to come pick me up,” he explains and then points to his bag. “What’s your name? Do we know each other?”
The stranger frowns. “My name is Kaito Momota. You’re…?”
He blinks a few times, trying to remember the names of the people around him. “Matsuoka Yuuji,” he responds. “And no, we haven’t met yet. I think we would’ve remembered someone like us though.”
Kaito seems to think about it for a while until recognition dawns on him. “Oh! Yeah, right. I guess we wouldn’t have recognized each other even if we had actually known each other before all this shit went down, huh?” He sighs and runs a hand through his hair. “Well anyway, sorry I almost knocked you over!”
Yuuji smiles slightly. He’s always liked friendly boys. They make everything easier. But the smile falters when he realizes Kaito is still wearing his coat which means that he was probably walking home without taking it off.
“Are you okay? Shouldn’t you put on more layers?” he asks worriedly. Kaito shrugs and turns away, heading towards the edge of the fields.

“It’s fine. This is what I wear most of the time anyways,” he mumbles. Before Yuuji has any time to respond, he disappears behind a large tree.
He’s just about to start following him when the door opens and a woman steps out. She’s tall and elegant and her skin is a pale brown color. She smiles kindly at Yuuji.
“Hello there! Your mother’s done making dinner so you should hurry inside,” she tells him kindly. Her voice reminds him of the sound of the rain on a rainy day, soothing and warm. He nods gratefully at her and hurries inside.
He finds his way to his room and quickly changes out of his clothes. He puts on a black shirt, khaki shorts and his favorite green hoodie. When he goes back downstairs, he finds his father eating dinner.
He grins at his son and places a gentle hand on his head. “There you are!”
Yuuji leans into his touch and smiles softly. He loves being with his dad, and he knows that his mother would agree. His dad is great; kind and understanding and loving. And he likes his little brothers, too. He doesn\'t care who they are.
“Where’d you go?” he hears from the other side of the table. Turning around, he finds his older brother sitting at the opposite end, staring at him curiously.
“I was outside,” Yuuji replies simply. He reaches across the table and pulls out the seat next to him, patting it invitingly. “Sit here. Mom made extra for all of us.”
His brother hesitates briefly but eventually moves forward, sliding into the seat next to his youngest sibling. A second later, the kitchen is filled with the aroma of curry and fried rice.
As soon as they start eating, Yuuji feels lighter than usual. For some reason, today felt different; like the weight on his shoulders has lessened. It’s probably because of the conversation he just had. The atmosphere of the house feels warmer, almost like a comforting blanket.
He finishes his food quickly, feeling better than he ever remembers feeling.
“Hey, Dad, can I stay the night at a friend\'s house?” Yuuji asks eagerly.
He notices how his father pauses from cutting another piece of meat and glances at him warily. “Uh, are you sure?” he asks uncertainly.
Yuuji gives him a reassuring nod. “Yeah, it’ll only be for one night!”
He can tell his father is still hesitant but he doesn’t say anything about it. He simply gets up and heads upstairs. After putting his plate in the sink, Yuuji follows close behind him.
When they reach his bedroom, he shuts the door and turns to look at Yuuji. He opens his arms expectantly and Yuuji immediately rushes into them.
“I love you, dad,” he whispers.
His father hugs him tightly and presses a kiss on the top of his head. “I love you, too, kiddo.”
